What is a receipt
A receipt is a document that confirms a payment has been made. Unlike an invoice, its main purpose isn't to detail a commercial transaction for tax purposes, but simply to record that an amount has been collected or paid.
When a receipt is used
It's commonly used to confirm rent payments, recurring fees, partial payments for a service, or any situation where both parties want proof of payment without needing to issue a full invoice.
What information it should include
The name of the payer and of the person receiving the payment, the amount and payment method (cash, transfer...), what the payment is for, the date, and the signature or confirmation from the person receiving it.
Does it replace an invoice
No. If the transaction is subject to VAT or must be declared to the tax authorities, a receipt is not enough: an invoice is required. A receipt works best as extra proof that a payment already invoiced has been collected.
