Simplified invoice

A simplified invoice (formerly a till receipt in some countries) is a reduced version of a regular invoice, designed for low-value or retail transactions, with fewer mandatory details.

When it can be used

It's commonly used for retail sales to individuals, especially for small amounts (specific thresholds vary by country), such as in shops, hospitality or local services.

What details it includes (fewer than a regular invoice)

Number and date.

The issuer's tax details.

A description of the products or services.

The VAT rate applied (or a note that the amount already includes it) and the total amount.

What details are NOT mandatory

Unlike a regular invoice, a simplified invoice doesn't necessarily require the client's full tax details, which speeds up transactions with individuals considerably.

When a regular invoice is needed instead

If the client is a business or freelancer who needs to deduct the expense, they will usually ask for a regular invoice with their full tax details, rather than a simplified one.
